Nova Contemporary is pleased to present new works by Aracha Cholitgul at the Discoveries Sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2024.
Titled Moving Images of Stones on the Island, this body of work illustrates Cholitgul’s long-term investigation of Koh Phangan Island. She envelopes viewers in a tropical oasis, even including a soundscape of distant party noises. However, she embeds sinister undertones in this relaxing backdrop, unfolding images of the island’s recent industrialisation and destruction.
In a monochromatic cycle of drawings, she depicts stones as her central protagonists, fantastically skewing the laws of scale and perspective. Like inborn observers of the land, the once tranquil stones now witness the chaos and ruination of their surrounding environment. Using an unassuming micro context, she exposes global ripples of neo-colonization and capitalism, revealing compromises of spatial and cultural identity.
